Herbal Lore

Using painting as an alembic for symbolic transformation, Gualdoni combines stained geometric patterns with descriptive botanical elements, concocting implausible curative grafts, each constructed to remedy specific maladies. Ginkgo and pepper hybridize to treat heart break and respiratory issues, while dogwood conjoined with ginseng root combine to bring longevity. She considers these impossible hybrids as vehicles for magical thinking – part superstition, part observed world, part snake oil. When encountering this work, we cross into a threshold space of moments of quietude marked by a lingering dissonance- a visual glitch or double-take happens, which mirrors an energy created by the acts of foraging and painting.
